What The Papers Say!

Interview GRAZIA

Where do I find you now?
After the US we moved to Singapore, then to Italy just outside Rome, and now Cyprus.

Why did you choose New York?
For as long as I can remember I had a dream of working on Wall Street. So I decided to do my degree there and hoped that would eventually lead to a job in finance. My dream came true when I finally was offered a position at Morgan Stanley as a Private Wealth Manager.

What is the most important thing you learned from your work at Morgan Stanley?
That working smart is more important than working hard. And that a ‘women’ can succeed in a man’s world if you really apply yourself.

What did success look like to you 10 years ago and what does it look like today?
Being able to care for my family was always my main motivation. My parents never had the opportunity I had, and my success is really their success. Today it’s still about my family, but today I have two young boys and I’m focused on giving them the best start in life. Part of this is showing them how important it is to have a strong work ethic.

What changed your dreams?
I realized my dream of getting to Wall Street. Then I met my future husband and we decided to travel and see more of the world. That took us to Singapore, and we \ relocated. I joined UBS at this time. Then my two boys were born, and my priorities changed. My primary concern became their well-being. Eventually focusing on making sure they were healthy led me to start my own wellness business.

Against the background of the pandemic, your idea of a protective cloak against viruses and bacteria sounds startlingly prophetic … How was BubbaRolla born?
Both my boys became unwell shortly after they were born. It turned out that the cause could be linked to the overwhelming amounts of air pollution that settles over Singapore when neighbors burn off their palm plantations. It’s almost impossible to breathe. This led to an idea of creating capsule for babies that could filter air. During the development we increased the filter’s specification to smaller particles, bacteria and viruses.

To whom are the brand’s products addressed? What kind of people do you recognize as potential buyers?
Both the Universal Air Protection System and our recently launched BubbaSkin – Swiss Supplement Skincare line are targeted at women both, during and after pregnancy.

How has the pandemic changed business models over the last year?
The biggest shift has been the move to online shopping. We were already set up to be direct to consumer via our website. The other change is more people working remotely. This is also something we are quite used to.

And how did you rearrange your family’s daily life?
We decided to isolate away from the more, high risks areas. For the first six months of the Pandemic we rented a house the island of Kea in Greece. The authorities shut down the ferries shortly after we arrived, it was almost deserted. For the boys it was amazing, even though it was technically locked down they had the exclusive use of the beaches. Life was very simply, fresh fish from the harbor or meat from the local farm, cooking outside on a charcoal grill. We were much more in touch with nature. Long walks in the hills and swimming most days in the sea.

What are the most important things you would like to teach your children?
The value of family and being there for each other. I’ve always had a strong bond with my sister and I know that if I ever needed anything she would be there for me. It’s so important to know you have someone in your corner. Of course, the other lesson would be to respect and value your parents. As my mother and father get older, I have learned to value more and more what they have done for me.

What message would you give yourself 10 years ago?
I would tell my 25 year old self to work less and enjoy more. Life is so rich but we often are moving so fast and so focused on our goals that we forget to enjoy the moment. I would also tell her not to settle down with anyone until she knew more about who she was and what she really wanted out of life. Finally travel more, take up yoga, dance whenever possible and drink plenty of water.
